On August 14, on the eve of the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine Rite was celebrated for the first time at the National Shrine of Our Lady in Ozernoye, as part of the annual Catholic Youth Festival of Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
The Divine Liturgy was presided over by Mitred Archpriest Vasyl Hovera, Apostolic Administrator for the faithful of the Byzantine Rite in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Concelebrating with him were Fr. Yaroslav Holovchuk, parish priest of the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Pavlodar, and Fr. Alexander Adomenas, parish priest of the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in the village of Shiderty.
Archbishop Tomasz Peta, Metropolitan Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Mary Most Holy in Astana, together with priests and participants of the youth festival from the dioceses of Kazakhstan and the countries of Central Asia, joined in prayer during the Divine Liturgy.
The liturgical chants were performed by the choir of the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Pavlodar.
After the Gospel reading, Fr. Vasyl addressed the young people in his homily. He reminded them that the Catholic Church embraces various liturgical rites and traditions, which are a true spiritual treasure of the Church. For many participants of the festival, this Divine Liturgy was their first encounter with the Byzantine Rite and an opportunity to experience its centuries-old spiritual and liturgical heritage.
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Tomasz Peta addressed those present. He thanked Fr. Vasyl and the priests of the Byzantine Rite for celebrating the Divine Liturgy and expressed his hope that the celebration of the Byzantine Liturgy at the youth festival would become a good and lasting tradition.
The first celebration of the Byzantine Divine Liturgy at the youth festival in Ozernoye became another visible sign of the unity of the Catholic Church in the richness and diversity of its liturgical traditions.
